Alona Angosta, PhD, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, FAAN


Bio

Dr. Alona Angosta is a Full Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON). She is also a Faculty Emerita Professor at  University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). She completed her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from UNLV.

Dr. Angosta’s research program focuses on cardiovascular disease, lifestyle interventions, and vulnerable populations. Dr. Angosta is nationally and internationally recognized for her research and scholarly work focusing on the cardiovascular health of Filipino Americans. She has secured external and internal grants for her research projects as principal investigator or co-investigator. Her accomplishments in the dissemination of science include numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, abstracts and proceedings, and presentations to international, national, and regional nursing and scientific conferences.

Teaching, Leadership, and Clinical

Dr. Angosta has more than 15 years’ experience in academia. She has taught at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She has mentored numerous students, most of which are employed as nurse practitioners, educators, and registered nurses in both Nevada and across the U.S. She has chaired and/or served as a member of Ph.D. dissertations, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) projects, and advised MSN students. She has mentored junior faculty by helping them publish, conduct research, and advance their education/professional career.

Dr. Angosta served in the U.S. Naval Reserves as a Nurse Corps Officer. Prior to coming to Baylor University, she was the Director of the MSN and post-master’s certificate programs at UNLVSON. She was instrumental in elevating the profile of the UNLVSON’s graduate program making it the #1 graduate nursing school in Nevada and top 10 online MSN program in the nation. It is during her leadership that the MSN program’s national rankings rose to #7 in the category of online education and from 76th to 40th in the category of Graduate & Professional Programs (U.S. News and World Report, 2021). She was also instrumental in increasing the enrollment of UNLVSON’s graduate program, and addition of new programs and clinical partnerships.

Dr. Angosta is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with 20 years’ experience in primary care, internal medicine, acute care, and military medicine. Prior to this, she has worked as a Registered Nurse in cardiovascular care unit, emergency care, level 1 trauma intensive care unit, and primary/urgent care clinics. She has made significant contributions in increasing awareness and recognition of minority nurse practitioners.

Honors and Awards

Dr. Angosta received numerous recognitions for her substantial contributions in advancing and transforming nursing to include Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, UNLV Outstanding Faculty of the Year, Nevada Nurses Association’s Outstanding Researcher Award, Excellence in Research and Service UNLVSON, and community and service awards for improving the health of Asian and Pacific Islander communities. In 2020, she received the Nurse Practitioner Advocate State Award for Excellence from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

Committees, Memberships, and Community Service

Dr. Angosta is the current Chair of the Tenure Committee at Baylor University LHSON. She is a reviewer for numerous nursing and scientific journals. She is a board member of the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations and past President of the Asian American Pacific Islander Nurses Association. She also served in the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Task Force at UNLVSON; Tenure & Promotion, Biomedical IRB, and other university committees, and the State Board of Nursing’s Advanced Practice Advisory Committee. She is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, American Nurses Association, League for Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau Zeta Kappa and Eta Gamma chapters, and Phi Kappa Phi.
